“He did what?!” Chuuya stops walking abruptly, his hands balling into fists.

Dazai shrugs, glancing over his shoulder, but not stopping.“Didn’t know you were going deaf-”

“Shut up!” Chuuya seethes, picking up the pace again. How dare this lowlife lay his hands on Y/N. He despised Dazai, yes, but Y/N? She was another story. The first time he’d seen her with Dazai in public, he had jeered at the guy, and Y/N had surprisingly stood up for him, insulting him back.

From then on, they’d gotten on surprisingly well. She wasn’t as annoying as Dazai, even if the guy was there, glued to her side 90% of the time. When the Port Mafia and the ADA had been asked to work together, they had made a pretty good team and eventually, Chuuya had begun to see her as someone to protect.

The instinct to protect her wasn’t the same instinct he harboured towards Dazai. No, that was more of a‘We’ve begrudgingly known each other for so long and I trust you, and if someone’s going to hurt your annoying ass it’s going to be me.’ Needless to say, Chuuya was more than infuriated when Dazai had told him why exactly he was out at 2am and why the hell he looked like he was back to his mafia days.

“What’s with the coat?”

“Oh this?” He looks down in thought.“Coincidence, I guess.” He smiles, and Chuuya can see right though the faux mirth.

Dazai stops in front of an alleyway abruptly and Chuuya halts as well. Glancing into the darkness, he Dazai spots a glint of metal, followed by a figure that emerges.

Chuuya’s eyes widen, not in surprise, but because of the blinding smile that crosses Dazai’s face.

It was him. He matched what Dazai had described to him exactly, down to the filthy brown hair, shabby attire and green eyes. He can tell Dazai has realised it too.

“Hand over your wallet, now.” The man, says, brandishing his knife, looking between the two other men. Dazai glances at him and Chuuya nods, taking the silent request to not intervene.

He decides to forgo the complaint of Dazai ordering him around, only because he knows that Dazai can raise more hell than he would. And he was looking forward to seeing this guy suffer.

“My wallet?” Dazai says, turning towards the man with a smile.“I’m afraid I don’t carry cash with me, but I do have something better.”

The man scowls and attempts to say something, but Dazai starts walking towards him, backing him back into the alley.

“What are you doing? Stay back!” The look in Dazai’s eyes is not a kind one, contrasting the peppy smile he dons on his face.“Are you fucking blind? I have a knife, I’ll kill you, stop!”

Chuuya snorts in amusement, and the man glances to the left to see the redhead leaning against the wall inside the alley, arms crossed, completely relaxed. Why the hell weren’t these idiots scared? “Kill us, huh?” Chuuya says, not moving.

By now, the three of them are deep inside the alley, shrouded from the eyes of anyone else. Although the man is the one holding the weapon, Dazai is the one in control. His very presence makes the hair on the back of the mans neck stand up.

“What’s your name?” Dazai’s voice, clear and commanding rings through the closed space, making the man jump.

“M-my name? Are you fucking insane? Why would I-” He’s cut off with a yelp as Dazai kicks him in the knee, grabbing his hand and easily disarming him, tossing the knife over his shoulder. It lands near Chuuya, who leans down and grabs it, bringing up up to inspect the blade. The man is thrown onto the ground onto his stomach, Dazai pinning his arm behind his back.

“Now now, don’t make this harder than it needs to be.” He grabs the mans hand, and starts bending two of his fingers backwards, humming when the man lets out a choked cry.“Your name?”

“H-Haruto!” The pressure eases up and the man, Haruto, breaths a shaky sigh of relief. What the hell was going on?

“Good! See, that wasn’t so hard, Haruto.” The name leaves a bitter taste in his mouth.“We’re going to have a little talk, now, and I suggest you play along. I’m going to assume you value your fingers?” Dazai says. The man nods and Dazai pats his back with his other hand and gets off Haruto.

Dazai dusts himself off and takes a few steps back.“So you are capable of a civil conversation!” He barely gets time to finish his sentence, before Haruto scrambles off the ground and lunges at Dazai, making a move to attack him.

The man in question clicks his tongue in disappointment and before Haruto can lay a hand on Dazai, he’s sent flying back into the alley wall, the stone cracking under the pressure. He coughs and slides down the stone with a groan, slumping onto the floor.

“Chuuya! I knew you were guard dog material! Look at you, coming to save your owner-”

“Keep talking and you’ll be the next one to crack stone.” Chuuya yells, glancing at him with a scowl. Dazai mimes zipping his mouth shut with an over exaggerated movement.

“What-...who the fuck are you?” Haruto croaks, trying to stand, but falling back down.

“Heard of the mafia?” Chuuya comments, tugging on his gloves, adjusting them, a smirk on his face when Haruto’s eyes widen in panic.

“The...the mafia?! I didn’t-you...”

“Don’t go scaring him with that, Chuuya!” Dazai sighs, walking towards Haruto and kneeling down in front of the guy, who is now shaking and trying to back away, His back hits the wall. there’s nowhere to run.

“Ah, don’t fret, the mafia wants nothing to do with you trust me...though by the end of it, you may wish it were them.” he mutters the last part to himself.

“Wha-”

“I’m actually here to talk business, I’m afraid.” Dazai explains, and if it weren’t for the cruel and unforgiving look in his eyes, Haruto would have assumed this guy was trying to help him.

“See, I was in the kitchen today a few hours ago-”

“Hurry up, no one wants to hear the beginning-” Chuuya starts to complain but is cut off by Dazai continuing on. He debates speaking again, but the fear and increasing confusion in the mans eyes stops him.

“-making dinner to surprise my lovely girlfriend,” Dazai is now sitting cross legged in front of Haruto,“and really, she’s a beauty and I love her to death...the best thing that’s ever happened to me-”

“What are you talking abo-”

“Anyway! Imagine my surprise when I hear the door open and in stumbles my beautiful partner, covered in bruises and blood.” His voice drops slightly, becoming colder. It sends a shiver down Haruto’s spine.“Instead of the lovely dinner I had planned, I spend the next few hours holding her as she cries and cleaning her wounds, bandaging her up and holding her as she falls asleep, very much in pain.”

Dazai sighs, shaking his head.“You may be acquainted with her.” He proceeds to give a small description of her, his anger returning as Haruto’s eyes widen, clearly remembering the encounter.

There’s a beat of silence.

“I don’t know-” He gasps as a knife, his own knife sails past his face, embedding itself millimetres next to his face. It nicks his ear as it whizzes past.

“I didn’t come here to waste my time. Hurry the fuck up.” Chuuya scowls, crossing his arms.

“I-”

“You did it.” Dazai states, his voice cold and furious, the sudden change in tone startling Haruto.“It’s written all over you face.”

“S-so what if I did? It’s already been done! you should have seen the way she screamed when I-”

Maybe it was an attempt to get some semblance of power back, or maybe the man was just rambling, but either way, it was the wrong thing to say. Dazai’s eyes flash and whatever Haruto was about to say next is drowned out by his own scream of pain, loud and shrill, echoing off the walls.

The sharp, clean ‘snap’ explains three of the mans fingers, which are bent at unnatural angles.

“You’re...insane!” Haruto yells in pain, cradling his arm to his chest.

“I found hand shaped bruises around her neck, you know.” Dazai say, matter of factly, his tone still the same. Haruto is yanked up by the collar of his shirt and slammed against the wall. He lets out a yelp as his head slams against the stone. One of Dazai’s hands wrap around is throat, the only thing keeping his held up.

“Tell me, Haruto, how hard would I have to press to leave bruises?” He tilts his head questioningly, and Haruto, as he claws at the hand, is pretty sure Dazai is insane.“I’m sure you know! Would I have to block your windpipe? Or maybe the body is more delicate than one thinks?” He hums in thought.

Haruto, at this point, is desperately trying to breathe.“I’m sorry!” He wheezes out. Dazai cocks his head to the side.

“I didn’t catch that, sorry?”

“I’m sorry! I won’t touch her, anyone, I won’t touch anyone again, I’m sorry!” Haruto cries, pleading with Dazai. Dazai mulls over the apology for a few minutes, before sighing and letting go, dropping the lowlife onto the ground in a heap.

While the man is gulping down lungful’s of fresh air, Dazai dislodges the knife Chuuya had thrown earlier.

“I’m not the one you should be apologising too, y’know?...Oh, you think we’re done?” Dazai chuckles, humourless, kicking the man in the side as he tries to scramble away.

The man coughs and looks around frantically, meeting Chuuya’s eyes, a silent plea for help. Chuuya just smirks and shakes his head.

“That was just for the handprints. You still have to atone for the cuts and bruises. I’m sure you know how many there were.”

He brings up the knife with an emotionless smile.

Dazai stands in their living room, staring at his black coat. It was stained with blood. He doesn’t regret anything he did today. Not at all. He tosses the coat out. There was no use trying to salvage it, even if blood was hidden easier on black.

“Osamu?” The sleepy voice prompts him to look up, setting the towel he was drying his hands on down.

“You’re awake, love? You should be sleeping!” He says, a soft smile on his face and he makes his way towards her. She falls into his open arms, nuzzling against him and sighing.

“You weren’t there.” Y/N mumbles sleepily. She yawns and Dazai’s smile widens at how adorable she is.

“I’m back now.” He says quietly as he leads her back to their bedroom, carefully helping her lay back down. He takes his rightful place next to her and pulls her to his chest, careful to avoid her injuries.

“Are you hurting anywhere?” He asks, running his hands through her hair. She yawns again, shaking her head.

“Can’t tell...too...tired.” She mumbles, smiling when she feels him press a kiss to her forehead.

“Sleep, then. You don’t want to end up tiny like Chuuya, do you?”

“I don’t think sleep and...and height have...have any correlation.” She mutters, on the verge of sleep.

“Of course they do! Trust the person who’s tall. I’ve got life experience, my love.” He chuckles, seeing her eyes slip shut and her breathing even out.

“...Love you.” It’s almost inaudible, whispered against him.

“And I love you.” He responds quietly, letting himself close his eyes too.

She was safe. She was safe and he’d make sure it stayed that way. His arms tighten around her protectively as he feels the rough texture of the bandages brush against his skin.

He swears it.
